Giving cash is a good way to get a big bang for your gift giving buck

It's the thought counts when it comes to giving gifts - but many of those receiving gifts prefer to count cold, hard cash instead.

A series of polls by ING in the Netherlands last week found 32% of the more than 80,000 respondents preferred to get cash as a present. But in a separate poll in the series, only half that proportion - or 16% - said they preferred to give money. The full results of the poll are online (in Dutch only).

It's not only a Dutch thing
The Dutch study echoes research carried out elsewhere. Studies of gift giving by economist and author of book Scroogenomics, Joel Waldfogel, had similar results. It suggests that giving a voucher or money could be a good way to get the best bang for your gift giving buck.
